維吉尼亞大學榮譽制度淺介

近日來台灣各界為了陳致中先生為何無法就讀維吉尼亞大學法學院紛擾不斷。即便陳致中先生符合了學校規定的行政程序入了學，筆者認為其也將無法通過維吉尼亞大學榮譽制度的考驗。茲簡單介紹維吉尼亞大學著名的榮譽制度：

維吉尼亞大學榮譽制度創設於1842年，距今已有160多年的傳承，並已成為維吉尼亞大學最令人感到驕傲的傳統之一。

榮譽制度簡而言之就是所有維吉尼亞大學的學生都承諾自己不可說謊、作弊與偷竊，若有任何人違反，唯一的制裁就是立即的永遠離開學校。由於所有學生都有如此的承諾，所以被證明違反榮譽制度之前，學生在彼此之間或學校教授與社區居民之間都百分之百的受到信任，進而營造一個完全被信任與自由安全的環境。

維吉尼亞大學的榮譽制度完全由學生自行管理，為了處理檢舉案件學生並組成「榮譽委員會（The Honor Committee ）」，負責接受檢舉並調查事實，同時設有陪審團，由隨機抽選的維大學生組成，被檢舉的學生還可要求有辯護人為其自身的清白辯護。

於1903年，詹姆士•黑二世先生（James Hay, Jr.）還寫了首名為「榮譽之人（The Honor Men）」的詩來描述此制度：（以下原文截取自 http://www.virginia.edu/honor/intro/honormen.html）

"I have worn the honors of Honor, I graduated from Virginia"

「我已佩戴上代表榮譽的勳章, 我畢業自維吉尼亞大學.」

這首史詩對性別的描述不被榮譽委員會所背書。
