COMING JANUARY 11th. We are thrilled to announce the Middleman x Grailed Kapital Drop. Featuring over 75 grails, staples, and never-before-seen-online pieces from the cult Japanese label. This Kapital Kountry coat hails to the bohemian branch of the line, which is a natural progression from Hirata’s fascination with working class Americana. Though blue-collar society is inherently at odds with those accustomed to bohemian luxury, the latter class owes its defining aesthetics to the former. The look emerged from the hippie 60s, championed by those who ultimately grew wealthy from the movement (think Doors manager Danny Sugarman, or any litany of platinum selling stars), and turned blue-collar staples like suede, bandana prints, and cowboy boots into something delicately beautiful. This subset of Kapital, which counts the iconic Okabilly jeans among its kin, is often defined by loud velvet and leopard print swatches, which are typically placed upon a base of a more utilitarian fabric, like corduroy or denim. Here the velvet pieces are woven within a rich corduroy shop coat, which features embellished buttons and belted closure. Available Friday the 11th, 12:00PM EST (-5 GMT), at Grailed.com. #middlemanstore

COMING JANUARY 11th. We are thrilled to announce the Middleman x Grailed Kapital Drop. Featuring over 75 grails, staples, and never-before-seen-online pieces from the cult Japanese label. The ring coat is perhaps the defining innovation which has sprouted from Hirata’s label. Ostensibly based on military sleeping bags, in practical application it lies somewhere between a peacoat and an M-65. Along with their typical wool and cotton iterations, every season the Kapital Kountry line releases an extremely limited run of embellished and hand painted ring coats which are “in store only” releases. The “Yukon” ring coat displayed above is among the most extravagant, featuring a fleece collar and inner, leather piping, a hand painted sleeve badge, and a vivid artisan rendering of a moose on the back of it. Kapital’s invocation of the Yukon, a physically unforgiving Canadian province deep in the arctic, is unsurprising, as much of the brand’s visuals are intertwined with ideals of the untamed wilderness. Lookbooks are often shot in remote locations, where the terrain is as much a character as any model or outfit (take the AW2014 “Peace Pilgrim” lookbook as an example, where wild birds of prey stalk in the background of numerous shots). Available Friday the 11th, 12:00PM EST (-5 GMT), at Grailed.com. #middlemanstore

The Bandana Bomber Jacket is a testament to Kira Hirata’s love of the material. He even founded a museum dedicated solely to bandanas. Despite originating in India, the bandana reached America in the mid-19th century, and in the hundred and seventy-five or so years since, its difficult to understate the pervasive quality of bandanas through almost every ubiquitous aspect of American culture — from blue-collar workwear, to bourgeoisie bohemians, to modern day street gangs, the fabrics have been appropriated and reintroduced into new eco-systems time and time again.
